About Taflheim

Taflheim is a modern reimagining of Hnefatafl, the ancient Viking strategy game also known as The King’s Table. Inspired by the original’s asymmetric gameplay, Taflheim brings new life to this historic battle of wits — where a lone king and his defenders must outmaneuver a larger attacking force. With updated visuals, refined mechanics, and immersive storytelling, Taflheim honors its Norse roots while offering a fresh experience for modern strategy game fans.

FAQ

Currently, Taflheim doesn’t have built-in matchmaking. Instead, you can share an invite link with friends, or find opponents directly in our Discord community. Many players there are happy to jump into a match, so it’s the best place to challenge someone new.

Hnefatafl is a Viking-era strategy board game, sometimes called the “Viking chess.” One player controls the king and defenders, trying to escape to the corners, while the other commands the attackers, aiming to capture the king. The game is easy to learn but offers deep strategy, similar to chess or checkers.

Right now we use the Copenhagen ruleset, one of the most balanced and competitive modern versions of Hnefatafl. It includes mechanics like shield wall captures and edge fort, keeping the game fair and exciting.

Yes! Taflheim is completely free to play. You don’t need an account to start. An account just helps you save progress and track your stats, but you can play casually without one.
